Discover the rich history and remarkable architecture of this medieval treasure, founded in 1089 in the Romanesque style and transformed in the 1300s under Edward III into the Perpendicular style. Highlights include the world-famous Cloister and the spectacular stained glass Great East Window in the Quire.
We’ll also descend to the Crypt to explore the passages and side chapels used by monks nearly 900 years ago.
A special feature of the visit is a behind-the-scenes tour of the Stonemasons’ Workshop, where traditional heritage crafts are demonstrated and the team shares insights into ongoing restoration projects.
Light refreshments will be served in the historic Parliament Room, normally closed to the public. This room is part of a suite believed to have hosted Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn during a week’s visit in 1535, just five years before the abbey was dissolved and Gloucester Cathedral established.

Access Information: The Crypt requires descending ten steps, but there is a handrail for support. While it’s not suitable for wheelchair users, it should be manageable for most visitors except those with more limited mobility. The Highlights Tour, however, is fully accessible, with ramps, lifts, and plenty of seating throughout.
