Historic Buildings & Places is urging the public to write to the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, calling for a review of proposals affecting Liverpool Street Station.
The scheme, recently approved by the City of London, would involve substantial demolition within the Grade II-listed station and the construction of a large over-station development. Concerns centre on the cumulative impact on the station’s historic fabric, its setting, and the experience of the millions of passengers who rely on it each year.
The proposals could also result in up to a decade of disruption at one of the UK’s busiest transport hubs.
Historic Buildings & Places recognises the need to invest in and improve transport infrastructure. However, it is clear that all reasonable options have not been fully considered, particularly those that may deliver improvements with a more sensitive approach to the existing station and its operation.
We urge the Mayor to review the scheme and consider whether it strikes the right balance between necessary development and the stewardship of an important historic place.
Liz Power, Director of HB&P said: “Liverpool Street Station is a vital part of London’s transport network and a place of historic significance. Any changes need to be properly thought through, especially given the impact they could have on the building and on passengers. We’re asking the Mayor to take a close look before any decisions are made.”
Act now
Historic Buildings & Places is encouraging anyone who uses the station, or who may be affected by the proposals, to write to the Mayor and make their views known.
