Visit to French Hospital Almshouses and Rochester Town Centre Walking Tour

Join us for a private talk and tour of the French Hospital Almshouses, an architectural walking tour of Rochester town centre and a visit to the Huguenot Museum!

Founded in 1718 to provide support for Huguenot refugees who came to England to escape the persecution of Protestant Christians, the French Hospital moved to Rochester in 1959.

The site was originally 19 terraced houses on Theobald Square that were in need of complete restoration and rearrangement to make 39 self-contained flats. During the 1970s and 1980s, additional flats were built and the Huguenot Garden was created, featuring flowers and shrubs associated with the Huguenots.

In the afternoon, we will go on a walking tour of the town centre, exploring the history and architecture of sites such as Eastgate House, a Grade I listed 16th and 17th Century townhouse, Minor Canon Row, built in the early 18th century and a remarkable example of Georgian domestic architecture, Rochester Cathedral and Castle, and the Guildhall Museum.

For the final stop on the tour we will have a chance to visit the Huguenot Museum. The Huguenot Museum displays the historic collection of the French Hospital.

Refreshments at the French Hospital Almshouses are included, and there will be a break for lunch (lunch not included).

Tickets: £12 members / £20 non-members.

Cancellation policy: Refunds can be provided for cancellations 7 or more business days prior to the event.
