Join Historic Buildings & Places for a private guided tour of Alexander Pope's Grotto and St Mary's Church, Twickenham on Tuesday 25th August 2026 from 11am - 2pm.

In a remarkable corner of Twickenham, two historic sites tell the story of one of England’s greatest literary figures. This exclusive visit offers a rare opportunity to explore both in a single afternoon.

In 1720, the poet, translator and satirist Alexander Pope built a villa and gardens on the banks of the Thames. His home was demolished in 1808 and the site redeveloped — it is now the home of Radnor House School. Yet within the school grounds lies the last surviving trace of Pope’s magnificent construction: his beautifully decorated grotto, listed Grade II* and recently removed from Historic England’s Risk Register following a period of conservation. We are delighted to offer a private guided tour of this extraordinary subterranean retreat.

After our tour of the grotto, we will break for lunch before reconvening for a guided tour of St Mary’s Church. It was here that Pope was buried in 1744 at the age of 56, and his parents’ memorial is also displayed within the church. The tower dates from the 15th century and still stands today, while the original nave — having collapsed in 1713 due to decay — was rebuilt in red brick by John James of Greenwich, a pupil of Christopher Wren. The churchyard contains monuments to a number of fascinating historical figures, among them Thomas Twining, founder of the famous tea company.
