We are saddened to learn of the passing of Dr Mark Girouard, a long-standing honorary member of Historic Buildings & Places.
Mark was one of the leading authorities on country houses, and known for focusing as much on the social history that takes place within buildings than their built form, through works such as The Victorian Country House (1971) and Life in the English Country House: A Social and Architectural History (1978).
He was also a strong supporter for the preservation of historic buildings, and was a founder, and first chairman, of the Spitalfields Trust, and has been involved in saving a significant number of historic houses in the East End of London from demolition.
Mark passed away on 16 August 2022. He will be missed.
