Building on our memorable visit to the Lord Leycester Hospital and tour with the Master in March 2024, we are delighted to welcome Matthew Vaughan from Donald Insall Associates and discover how this iconic site was sensitively upgraded to enhance public access and secure its future.

One of the country’s most significant medieval sites, the Lord Leycester Hospital, welcomed record visitor numbers following its reopening in late 2023. This milestone came after extensive capital improvements designed to enhance the visitor experience and comfort. For the first time in history, the Master’s House and the Medieval Wall are now accessible to the public, marking a new chapter for this storied site.

We’re delighted to host Matthew Vaughan, Practice Director at Donald Insall Associates, the conservation architects behind this extraordinary project. Matthew will provide insights into how the project team carried out intricate, sensitive upgrades to bring the Lord Leycester into a new era. This included enhancing level access, improving thermal comfort, and achieving a remarkable 23% increase in public access areas.

Matthew Vaughan, an AABC-accredited architect and Practice Director at Donald Insall Associates, leads the Birmingham studio. With a background in both historic conservation and contemporary design, he has worked on a range of high-profile cultural projects, building expertise in modern and traditional construction techniques. Matthew excels at balancing historic conservation needs with sustainable revenue goals, ensuring that traditional buildings remain functional and accessible. His experience includes leading National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) projects from bid submission to delivery, and he is a member of both EASA and Worcester DAC.

Tickets are free (with optional donation) for members and £4 for non-members.
