Gifts in Will

Safeguard Historic Buildings & Places with a Gift in Your Will

For over 100 years, gifts in wills have been truly transformational for Historic Buildings & Places. They have enabled us to speak up for historic places of every kind — from humble vernacular cottages to complex townscapes — and to defend the everyday heritage that means so much to communities.

By leaving a gift in your will, you will help us continue this work for the next 100 years and beyond, ensuring future generations can enjoy, cherish and learn from the historic environment.

The difference your gift can make

Previous legacies have played a vital role in our work. They have:

  • Expanded our casework, allowing us to take on more staff and extend our reach across England and Wales.
  • Supported crucial site visits that can shape constructive relationships and secure positive outcomes.
  • Help raise awareness of heritage at risk and champion the everyday places that matter to communities.
  • Safeguarded our independence and resilience, protecting us from the uncertainty of public funding.

Every gift, no matter the size, helps us plan with confidence and ensures we can continue to defend and promote historic buildings and places of all ages and all types.

Types of gifts

There are several ways you can include Historic Buildings & Places in your will:

  • Residuary gift – a share, or all, of what is left of your estate once other gifts and expenses have been made.
  • Pecuniary gift – a fixed sum of money. Even a modest gift can make a lasting difference to our work.
  • Specific gift – a particular item of value, such as property or shares.
  • Your whole estate – leaving everything to HB&P, if you feel able to do so.

Already made a will? You don’t need to start again — you can add a gift by making a codicil (a simple legal amendment) or setting out your wishes in a letter of wishes. A solicitor can guide you through either option.

The tax benefits of leaving a gift

Leaving a gift to charity in your will can also reduce the amount of inheritance tax due on your estate. In some cases, if you leave 10% or more of your estate to charity, the rate of inheritance tax is reduced.

We recommend speaking to your solicitor or professional advisor to understand the potential benefits for you and your loved ones.

The Pledge Circle

If you have chosen to include Historic Buildings & Places in your will, we would love to welcome you into our Pledge Circle.

The Pledge Circle recognises the special commitment of those who have decided to support our future in this way. As a member, you will receive:

  • A warm thank-you and welcome from our Director.
  • Updates on the difference your support helps to make.
  • Invitations to events where you can hear directly about our work and meet others who share your passion for heritage.

Telling us about your gift does not commit you in any way, but it allows us to thank you properly and share our future plans with you. If you would like to join the Pledge Circle, please get in touch using the contact details below.

How to leave a gift

If you would like to leave a gift in your will, your solicitor will need the following details:

  • Charity name: Historic Buildings & Places (or The Ancient Monuments Society)
  • Registered charity number: 1210157
  • Address: The Courtyard, 37 Spital Square, London, E1 6DY

We recommend speaking to a solicitor to make sure your wishes are set out clearly and carried out just as you intend.

Tip: You can use either “Historic Buildings & Places” or “The Ancient Monuments Society” — just be sure to include our charity number.
