HB&P Online Talk: The principles of Conservation Management Planning

Join us for an online talk on Monday 19 October 2026 exploring Conservation Management Plans and how they can help you understand, care for and manage historic buildings and places.

Want to know more about Conservation Management Plans (CMPs) and how they can help?

This talk explores when CMPs are most useful, how they are structured, how they can be effectively delivered, and how they can be used once they have been written. We will also discuss how they can be applied to buildings great and small, along with how a holistic approach can produce meaningful results. The talk will also cover some handy “dos” and “don’ts” for anyone considering commissioning a CMP.

The talk will be led by Bryher Mason of Avalon Planning and Heritage who has been the author or co-author of a number of Conservation Management Plans and has practical experience of managing a variety of heritage assets.

More about CMPs

CMPs should be an exemplar of applied research that provide innovative solutions to issues affecting heritage assets. As the National Lottery Heritage Fund states; Conservation planning is a process that will help you look after your heritage the best way you can.

Conservation management planning is a tool for effective and responsible management of historic sites. CMPs help site managers to navigate the balance between conservation and access; repair and restoration; as well as to tackle the uncertainties of environmental and economic change. They can also reveal new layers of meaning and significance to guide decision-making. If the site is open to the public, better understanding enables managers to enrich storytelling and interpretation.
