Eric Parry will share the story of the renewal of St John’s Waterloo, a project that demonstrates how thoughtful design can reinvigorate a historic place of worship while strengthening its role at the heart of a busy urban community.
The transformation of the church’s crypt into a cultural venue has created a new civic presence below ground, while sensitive interventions to the nave have reconnected the building with the life of the city beyond its doors. At the east end, renewed spatial focus has enhanced the church’s spiritual character, alongside carefully considered environmental improvements designed to support a more sustainable future.
This is an opportunity to hear first-hand about the challenges and rewards of working creatively within a significant historic building.
History of St John’s Waterloo
St John the Evangelist, Waterloo, is a Grade II* listed church built between 1822 and 1824 to the designs of Francis Bedford. Constructed on marshy ground close to the Thames, it was one of 612 Commissioners’ Churches created to serve London’s rapidly expanding population. St John’s is the largest of four Greek Revival churches in Lambeth, alongside St Matthew’s Brixton, St Mark’s Kennington, and St Luke’s Norwood.
