We’ll begin at the Grade I listed Shah Jahan Mosque in Woking, the oldest purpose-built mosque in the United Kingdom.
Built in 1889 by Dr Gottlieb Wilhelm Leitner in the late-Mughal style and beautifully restored in 2017, the mosque remains a landmark of spiritual and architectural heritage.
After exploring the mosque and its gardens, we’ll continue our day with a tour of Brookwood Cemetery, also Grade I listed, and home to many historic monuments to notable figures including Dr Leitner, the American artist John Singer Sargent, Sir Cosmo and Lady Lucy Duff Gordon (who survived the sinking of R.M.S. Titanic), and Dame Rebecca West, author, reporter and critic.
