Act Now to Help Save Liverpool Street Station

Posted: 11 June 2025

Historic Buildings & Places fully supports the campaign to stop the highly damaging redevelopment proposals for Liverpool Street Station — and we’re asking for your help.

The latest plans from Network Rail and their architects, Acme, are now live on the City of London Planning Portal. If approved, this scheme would cause substantial harm to the historic station, its remarkable trainshed and hotel, and the surrounding Conservation Area. It would set a deeply troubling precedent for how our built heritage is treated.

As a member of the Liverpool Street Station Campaign Alliance (LISSCA), we are urging everyone who cares about heritage, place, and the character of our cities to object to this application.

The Victorian Society, who chair the campaign, have produced a clear and practical Guide to Writing an Objection. It explains how to submit an objection via the City of London planning portal, or how to email your objection directly to the planning committee. It also outlines a range of valid reasons to object, not limited to heritage concerns.

The deadline for objections is Thursday 4 July 2025.

While Liverpool Street Station undoubtedly needs investment to support its continued operation, that must not come at the cost of losing what makes it so special.

What you can do:

A public inquiry may be needed to fight this proposal if it’s approved — and your voice now could help prevent irreversible damage to one of London’s great historic places.

Acme’s plan shows the bulk of the proposal. The Great Eastern Hotel is dwarfed by the tower and overstation development. Plan: Network Rail and Acme.
