Historic Buildings & Places is delighted to announce Tavia Swain as the winner of the 2024 Stephen Croad Prize. This prestigious annual award, which carries a prize of £500, celebrates excellence in new architectural research and writing.
The prize honours the legacy of Stephen Croad, a distinguished author, researcher, and archivist of architectural history. His dedication to uncovering and documenting the historic buildings of England and Wales made a profound impact on the field, inspiring generations of architectural historians.
Tavia Swain, who studied Fine Art and Art History at Goldsmiths, University of London, and recently completed an MA in Architectural History at the Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, impressed the judges with her essay titled: ‘How did the BT Tower achieve icon status and has this been maintained into the 21st century?’
The award was officially presented to Tavia on 2 December 2024 during the HB&P Annual Lecture. Her essay will be published in the 2025 edition of the Journal of Historic Buildings & Places.
Congratulations to Tavia Swain for this well-deserved recognition of her outstanding contribution to architectural research.
