Join our team in Warwick on Wednesday 20th March 2024 at 1:30pm for a tour of The Lord Leycester Hospital.

Come along for a bespoke tour from The Master of The Lord Leycester and discover the fascinating history behind these medieval almshouses, originally built and developed by the local Guilds during the 14th and 15th centuries to aid town governance, house travellers and provide support to the poor.

In the 16th century, Robert Dudley, of Elizabeth I’s court, established a military community of Master and Brethren in the old Guild buildings.

In 1965 Historic Buildings & Places (then the Ancient Monuments Society) published ‘The Lord Leycester Hospital, Warwick’ by Rear Admiral S. A. Pears (Master of the Hospital) in our Transactions Vol 13. Now, as we celebrate our centenary, we are once again going back to Warwick to see how the site has changed 59 years later. Read more about the intriguing history of the site and its association with the AMS dating back to 1965.

The medieval buildings underwent restoration in the mid-19th and 20th centuries, and have just reopened in August 2023 following a further, multi-million pound restoration. During our tour, we will also hear all about this extensive restoration work.

Tickets cost £25 members / £33 non-members and include the deliciously indulgent ‘Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester’ Cream Tea.

Accessibility: Please note since the sites recent renovations most places are now readily accessible to wheelchairs with the exception of the Chapel. For those who cannot reach the chapel there is a video in the Guildhall showing the Chapel.

Cancellation policy: Refunds can be provided for cancellations 7 or more business days prior to the event.
