Following the presentation on the restoration work, we will take a tour of the Gateway and Abbey Quarter, including the West Gate and Hospitium.
The Grade I listed Gateway is a substantial part of what remains of Reading Abbey.
This Gateway divided the public area of the Abbey grounds and the private area which is now in ruins. It was once part of the Reading Ladies Boarding School, famously attended by Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra.
In 1861 the Gateway collapsed in a storm and had to be substantially rebuilt. This work was completed by Sir George Gilbert Scott, a Victorian architect known for his Gothic Revival work, who also designed Reading Gaol within the Abbey Quarter.
Please note for accessibility reasons that, if practicable, during the tour we will go onto the roof of the Gateway via a spiral stair.
Tickets cost £16 Members / £24 Non-Members. If you would like to attend, please contact us at membership@hbap.org.uk.
Cancellation policy: Refunds can be provided to attendees for cancellations 7 or more business days prior to the event.
